Information
SpaceX chose the launch facility at Omelek Island as a backup site for its Falcon 1 launch vehicle. Initially planned to launch from SLC-3W at Vandenberg Space Force Base, plans fell through and SpaceX shifted towards operations from the Ronald Reagan Missile Defence Facility in the Kwajalein Atoll. Omelek Island was the site of all flights of Falcon 1, including SpaceX’s first ever flight. Following the retirement of Falcon 1 in 2009, The launch facility at Omelek Island was also retired and has not been used as an orbital launch facility since.
